To coincide the schedule of the 10th anniversary of Jinaimachi Hina Dolls
Festival, the guided monitor tour in English was held so as to guide foreign
visitors in Tondabayashi Jinaimachi historic district on March 13, 2016,
as a special event promotion organized by Local Community Promotion Board
by agriculture, food and tourism with its secretariat service undertaken
by Impregion Co. Ltd. Osaka, Japan. They assume the number of foreign personal
tourists visiting Japan is anticipated to further increased so that this
event promotion may be intended to offer an English guided tour to those
participants who have an idea or plan to guide foreigners in English to
go round Jinaimachi town in the future. Those participants who live in Tondabayashi city and its neighborhood, are keen in being engaged in an international exchange activity, in communicating with foreigners, and in spreading out the information on Japanese culture and life all over the world. They wish an opportunity of really guiding foreign visitors and foreign student of the local university to Tondabayashi Jinaimachi. I undertook as a goverment-licensed guide interpreter to guide the 18 participants who booked the course in advance. The participation fee per person amounted in 800 Yen for lunch. 20160313 Guide presentation in English (PDF) |

Following the good fortune yesterday, we were blessed with good weather
from morning to the evening on that day, and Jinaimachi historic district
was full of visitors. The English guide monitor tour started by self-introduction
of all the participants followed by explaining the summary of the program
by showing the slides at the assembly room on the second floor of Jinaimachi Visitor Center. After the lecture, the party departed from Jinaimachi Visitor Center for the residence of Nakamura family where lunch was prepared for us. It took approximately one and a half hours walking through Jinaimachi, full of visitors on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Jinaimachi Hina Meguri Festival, while explaining the characteristic of the merchant's family buildings and the town planning originated from the age of the Civil War both in Japanese and English afterwards on each spot. |

On the way to the residence of the Nakamura family, the party dropped in at the former storehouse of Japanese sake brewery of Banri-no-Haru brand, the indoors of which were opened to the public for the event promotions for two days on March 12 and 13, 2016. Hina Meguri kimono marketplace was held indoors on March 13. Then, I introduced, at the residence of Sugita family along Jyounomon-suji street, the episode about Shoki-san placed on the roofs facing ridge-end tile of demon each other as well as the episode of arch roof tile with the Tomoe (vortex) pattern on.

Furthermore, I dropped in at the main hall of Koushouji Betsuin Buddhist Temple, which was newly designated as an important cultural property of the country in September, 2014. In the main hall of a Buddhist temple, I talked about the origin of a sculpture put for kaeru-mata structures shaped in spread legs of frogs referring to as "the twenty-four paragons of filial piety" in China. Associated with the fusuma picture titled "pine, bamboo, and plum" painted by Mr. Kano Jyuseki Hidenobu, he was said to have drawn the corridor of the pine trees of ex. Edo Castle. In front of the main gate of Koushouji Betsuin Buddhist Temple, the group photo was taken with all the participants afterward Hina Dolls decorations. The origin of the main gate was told that it had been removed and rebuilt from ex.Fushimi Castle in Kyoto. The episode concerning the gate for Imperial messengers was also referred, too.

The residence of the Nakamura family became the last spot of the English guided monitor tour. The merchant's
family prospered in brewing business so much in the Edo era. Because the
local brewers were blessed with rich groundwater in Tondabayashi and their
products were superior in quality, they were carried all the way to Edo
(Tokyo) and were presented to the Tokugawa Shogunate Government, and were
consumed even in Edo in those days. I introduced an episode of "Kudari-sake",
referring that the sake was transported from Kamigata (Kyoto-Osaka area)
bound for Edo (Tokyo). The indoors of the Nakamuras house was opened to public for the lunch meeting place in particular for these two days. I had all the participants proceed to the guestrooms from the entrance hall located after the center part of the long wall facing the Tomi-suji street. Jinaimachi Gozen luncheon box was served to the participants, who anticiated to taste it so much. Jinaimachi Gozen The special luncheon box called Jinaimachi Gozen was specially prepared for the promotion by Asahi-ya local Japanese restaurant. The menu was revived by following the descriptions of an old diary book kepy in Edo era which was found in the residence of old Nakamura family. The special luncheon event was organized by Local Community Promotion Board by agriculture, food and tourism on March 13, 2016. The Jinaimachi Gozen was reproduced for the first time in November, 2014 and the tasting party event on this occasion was held at ex.Tanaka family residence. The event promotion turned out to be favorably accepted. The inside of residence of the old Nakamura family is not opened to the public, but it was specially opened for the promotion for the limited number of participants. |

I asked for feedbacks about the English guided monitor tour from each participant
while having the lunch of Jinaimachi Gozen. Even those who live nearby
and have ever visited Jinaimachi town a few times, came to recognize again
the value of historic town which continued to suceed from the Edo and the
successful preservation of the townscape. Given an opportunity from now on, everybody wants to guide a foreign friend, a relative and foreign visitors to Tondabayashi Jinaimachi by all means. I was also encouraged to get a nice comment that they want to make use of the handout of English guide textbook which I prepared. A certain participant is scheduled to guide four and more foreigner tourists from France and Australia who stayed up in a guest house in Nishinari-ku in Osaka city and visited Tondabayashi Jinaimachi immediately after the English guided monitor tour finished in the afternoon of the day. The participants are by all means expected to cooperate in conveying and spreading information of Tondabayashi Jinaimachi through the Internet including Facebook and Twitter. After the lunch finished, the English guided monitor tour was dissolved on schedule on the site. |

By the way, those who had participated in the in-bound tourists seminar
held on Saturday, February 20, 2016 also joined the guided tour this time.
Judging from the fact that the eighteen participants who greatly exceeds
the offer capacity number of fifteen, I am glad and am surprised at such
high interests. In addition, I was informed by the organizer of the fact
that those who applied for but were not able to participate in the tour
due to the exceeding capacity. I want to arrange the similar opportunity
again sometime. Thank all of you, the participants, the organizer, Mr. Nakamura and many concerned of Tondabayashi-city municipality office and Jinaimachi town, for support and cooperation of the English guided tour this time. |
